caravan 2008, 11–13 May
caravan was a new initiative that aimed to strengthen the international networks and expand the range of opportunities for performing artists and companies in south east England to work abroad.
There were two strands to the work of caravan. The dialogue programme was a series of conversations that started in autumn 2007 that prepared companies for working internationally. This was followed by an international assembly in Brighton, England in partnership with the Brighton Festival. The assembly was designed as a convivial event that encouraged artists, commissioners, presenters, festival programmers and potential collaborators to explore new ways of working, share ambitions, reach new audiences, develop new ideas and, hopefully, create new art. The programme of performances, extracts, interventions and conversations included 26 of the regions most exciting theatre and dance companies.
Through support from Arts Council England, South East England Development Agency and United Kingdom Trade & Industry we were able to host 30 international delegates by providing them with hotel accommodation and a contribution to their international travel costs.
